NFL- QBs help NFC close the gap on AFC. With all the excitement created by Brett Favre going to Minnesota, Jay Cutler going to Chicago and Matt Ryan emerging as a budding star in Atlanta, I'm starting to wonder if the NFC has finally caught up to or surpassed the AFC as a conference. NHL-The silence of NHL players in the wake of NHLPA boss Paul Kelly suggests unity. Most players want a firm not militant leader who can also work with the NHL. The NHLPA won't confirm or deny that Kelly was fired for looking at secret records.

Golf-Steve Stricker was among eight players who had at least a share of the lead Sunday in the Deutsche Bank Championship. He was filled with uncertainty until the ball barely cleared a creek and bounced up to 5 feet for eagle, giving Stricker a 6-under 65 and a share of the lead with Retief Goosen and Sean O'Hair. TENNIS- After trading bagels in the first two sets, Kim Clijsters ended Venus Williams' U.S. Open run with a wild 6-0, 0-6, 6-4 win. The No. 3-seeded Nadal beat No. 32 Nicolas Almagro 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 in an all-Spaniard matchup.
